September 23rd, 2007 just off the easel...
There are a few artists out there who have elevated deserts to high art, with the great grandaddy of them being Wayne Thiebaud, but some other artists I like also have tackle the subject with skill, as can be seen here, and here.
I'm perfectly content to stand in their shadows on this one, but I just had to take advantage of the last little bit of birthday cake I had left over from my birthday...

I sat down at the easel with the intention of painting a freshly cut rose. For whatever reason, it just didn't sing to me. But the pruners did...

Another study of the Kwan Yin bust. This time in natural daylight, against a green background. The way whites change as a result of dominant local color an light is endlessly fascinating to me.

This airplane was an interesting challenge-- backlit on a silver metallic paper.
I have progress shots, but I'm a little too lazy too carve them out and post them at the moment.
The colors look a little muddy in this image-- I'll re shoot for better color when it dries.

I bought some colored paper to serve as more varied background material for object painting. This little bugger gave me some grief in the middle (see the erased part), but I think I brought it back well enough. I ended up chasing the light a little on this painting-- the values and colors were starting to change pretty dramatically from when I started a few hours before. I had to stop it where it was, or I'd still be at it tonight...

More paper airplanes. They're fun to paint for a couple of reasons: interesting edges, neat composition, and challenging light play. Although the shapes are deceptively simple, they take as long as anything else to paint. No progress shots for one of them-- my camera's batteries need charging!

They are both still very wet. I'll likely re shoot the images tomorrow for better color.
Update July 28th: puttered a bit more on the figure painting, and re shot both paintings for better color.

It's weird painting something so close to my subject matter of choice over the years— people, but rendered in a crude cartoony fashion. I have a hard time looking at the face, although it is very close to the actual figure's features.

Two more sake bottles. I thought it might be interesting to mix it up and do a light on dark as opposed to Wednesday's piece. The color on the final shot isn't the greatest (although it's not bad)-- the paint's still very wet, so I'll probably update the image tomorrow.

I forgot to take progress shots, but here is a rarity for me: a still life.
This is a small sake bottle, with a very uneven glazed surface. I got the inspiration from looking at Duane Keiser's blog.
I've been thinking about doing more still life/object painting in any case... but gosh, you see Keiser's work, and it makes you want to dash off to the easel tout suite.

I thought this might be such a painting, but inspiration struck and I put it back on the easel.

Since I've been a little scarce over the last month or so, I thought that I'd show extra steps of progress along the way. This piece is 16 X 20 inches on linen.
This is the third time that I've painted this particular image-- the first time about two years ago. That original piece was a disaster, and I knew that I wanted to paint it again. I painted a study for it in November. This feels much closer to the painting that was in my minds eye.
